Good Afternoon, Sweeties….Yes, I admit it…My house smells like yeast. Today is Bread Starter feeding day. I have three different ones going. A Sourdough starter, an Amish Friendship Bread starter and my Mom’s Fruit Cake starter going, all brewing and bubbling away in my kitchen. Since my abode is small, kitchen smells travel quickly through the house. As the starters are ready to bake, I will be sharing the recipes and instructions on how to use each starter.
Since I am new to blogging, I just realized I am about to have my first series. A Bread Series. I have been baking all three of these breads since I was a teenager. Wow….that is a long long time. I love sourdough bread. Sour, tangy and crusty. My starter has changed and grown tastier over time. I don’t remember the exact recipe I started it with but will share one and my favorite bread recipe. Unfortunately, I don’t remember where the recipe came from. All the recipes I have been using for years. Long before the internet and instant access to hundreds of recipes. Back in a time, when recipes were handwritten and passed from mother to daughter, from grandmother to granddaughter, shared with friends and neighbors.
Just like my sourdough starter, my Amish Friendship starter I have had forever. Started from a recipe I don’t remember. There is a fabulous website I found that has hundreds of Amish Friendship recipes, FriendshipBreadKitchen. I have only made bread with this starter but there are some great recipes on this website that I plan on trying.
Last, but certainly not least; is my Mom’s Fruit Cake recipe that uses fresh or canned fruit. None of that candied dry stuff that most people hate. The name of her recipe is 30 Day Fruitcake. I still need to add maraschino cherries to the starter. There still is two weeks left before it will be ready to bake cake. As I bake each recipe, I will be sharing recipes and Wish I could share the delicious goodies that result for all these yeasty brews.
See you soon with the baking of sourdough bread…..I can hardly wait.
